U.S. PIRG organises Tax Day events

SAY NO TO TAX DODGERS: JOIN THE ACTION ON APRIL 17

The 99% will be out on force on federal tax return day with a message for America's tax dodgers: It's time for the richest 1% to pay their fair share of taxes.

You can help spread the word by planning an action in your town.

WHO’S INVOLVED: Among the progressive groups planning actions on April 17 are the Agenda Project, MoveOn, Rebuild the Dream, United for a Fair Economy, USUncut, Occupy movements, unions and many others.

OUR GOAL: Shine a light on the giant corporations that pay little or no taxes, the rich individuals who pay a lower tax rate than secretaries and teachers, and the political officeholders who are letting them get away with it by catering to the interests of the top 1%.

OUR MESSAGE: We’re fed up with the corporations and rich people who should be paying hundreds of billions of dollars more in taxes each year. It’s time for these tax dodgers to pay what they owe so we can create good jobs and make our communities strong. We call on our elected leaders to represent the 99% and make the 1% pay their fair share.

ACTION IDEAS:

Deliver a bill for unpaid taxes to the top tax dodgers in your town. They can be wealthy individuals (like Mitt Romney or a corporate CEO) or a giant corporation. You can find information about America’s top corporate tax dodgers at http://www.uspirg.org/sites/pirg/files/reports/USPIRG_Representation_Without_Taxation.pdf

Stage a rally or protest at the offices of members of Congress, state legislators, or other elected officials with a long history of representing the 1% instead of the 99%.

Spread the word at post offices, busy intersections, and worksites using leaflets, stickers, or voter pledges.

BE CREATIVE! Use costumes and street theater to tell a story about tax dodgers, Buffett’s secretary, unemployed people, victims of budget cuts, etc. Or play a game of dodge ball, limbo (how low can their taxes go?), or baseball featuring Tax Dodger uniforms. This is our chance to draw attention to America’s biggest tax dodgers – and have fun at the same time!
